In honor of Earth Day, hundreds of volunteers will descend on Wissahickon Creek for a spruce-up on the morning of Apr. 29. The annual Creek Clean Up has been running for 53 years and works in tandem with Friends of the Wissahickon. Rachel Ravina waded through the details for Mainline Media News.

Families, friends, and organizations will pick up trash along the river in over 14 municipalities.

“I think people like the creek cleanup because you get to spend the morning outside with your friends and family, and you are doing something that you can see an improvement by the end of the morning,” said Wissahickon Trails Executive Director Gail Farmer.

“Picking up garbage just has an immediate impact in terms of preserving the beauty of the creek and the health of the creek, and I think people enjoy that.”

The Ambler Environmental Advisory Council will also be hosting EarthFest the same day.

“Many Ambler residents want to live more sustainably, and the reality is the resources are there, it’s just a matter of creating awareness and making those connections,” said Ambler EAC Chairman Wes Pipitone.
