Tick-tick-tick. That subtle elapse of the April calendar is an annual reminder that it’s income tax season, and time’s a-wasting. Although it may be a mixed bag from household to household, SmartAsset has calculated that a regional assessment of refunds may spur local filers to submit sooner rather than later.

Nationally, 70 percent of American taxpayers expect Internal Revenue Service refunds.

Using those data, SmartAsset’s analysts engaged in some hyper-local calculating. They divided the total amount of money refunded to residents by the number of refunds given out in each Pennsylvania county.

Statewide, Montgomery County landed at No. 2.

It has 307,920 taxpayers each receiving an average of $3,289, arriving at a “received most” index of 26.88.

The data also show the scope of the annual downside to this annual accounting: 98,820 Montgomery payers to Uncle Sam owe an average of $9,023.

Neighboring Chester County topped the refund-value list at No. 1. Its residents are receiving refund payments that average $3,348.

Delaware County is just below Montco in the ranking; Its refund average of $3,218 resulted in a No. 3 slot.

Bucks County trailed locally, landing at No. 4 with a $3,140 average refund.

Statewide data on tax refunds by county are at SmartAsset.
