PennDOT has opened its revamped Southeastern Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC) in Upper Merion, according to a staff report from The Times Herald.

PennDOT District 6 Executive Louis Belmonte and Pennsylvania Department of General Services Acting Deputy Secretary for Capital Programs Greg Kirk were present for the grand opening ceremony. They were accompanied by local officials and state police officers.

“The new Southeastern RTMC will expand our capabilities by providing a larger and more modern facility for the management of PennDOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems,” said Belmonte.

“This will allow us to optimize our operational strategies and technologies and continue our commitment to manage a safe transportation network and help motorists move freely throughout the Philadelphia region.”

The center, which manages the busiest and largest transportation network in the state, services Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.

As part of its operations, the $49.2 million, 43,000 square-foot facility operates over 50 percent of PennDOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices. This technology includes:

  • 477 closed-circuit cameras
  • 207 dynamic message signs,
  • 700+ sensors/readers for travel time and incident detection
