U.S. Census Bureau data on 2022 population shifts in Pennsylvania drill down to statistics on Montgomery County demographics, as reported by Eugene Tauber in The Morning Call.
On the state level, Pa. lost about 40,000 people last year.
Most of those exits resulted from net migration, that is, the calculated difference between people who moved from the state, minus the people who moved to the state.
Last year, 39,957 Pennsylvanians opted for residency outside the Commonwealth. Conversely, 26,741 chose to move to the Keystone State from somewhere else
Looking at births and deaths, the 2020 trend of the former trailing the latter continues. For three years running, more Pennsylvanians died than were born.
Closer to home, Philadelphia County had one of the largest county population losses in the nation; its shedding of approximately 22,222 residents landed it No. 6 in a national ranking for citizen flight.
Montgomery County’s demographics saw the following changes in 2022:
- Population: 864,683
- International migration 1,781
- Domestic migration: -666
- Births: 8,456
- Deaths: 5,642
- Total population change: 661
Montco leads in total collar-county data for population figures, births, and deaths. Chester County outpaced it for total population change, gaining 4,959 new residents in 2022.
Numerous other 2022 statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau are at The Morning Call.
