Summer 2022 was a bit of a challenge for travelers flying out of Philadelphia International Airport.

Vacationers were met with flight cancellations, airport staff shortages, and long TSA lines, writes Michelle Myers for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Things will look better this summer, but delayed flights are now part of the summer travel landscape, according to Charlie Leocha, co-founder of Travelers United.

These summer tips may help avoid some of the major pitfalls:

  1. Fly between Monday and Thursday, as early as possible, preferably before 9 AM
  2. Arrive at least three to four hours before an international flight and at least two-and-one-half to three hours earlier for a domestic
  3. Allow time for commuting traffic
  4. Travel with a carry-on only
  5. Consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck at PHL to speed things up
  6. Masks are not required at this point, but using them is up to the passengers, and free masks are available. International passengers should check for any COVID restrictions
  7. Be patient and check for updates on flight delays before heading to the airport
  8. If your flight is delayed or canceled, ask your airline for alternate options. You can also check the U.S. Department of Transportation Airline Customer Service Dashboard
