Corporate leaders at Globus Medical in Audubon first floated acquisition overtures to NuVasive — a San Diego competitor of sorts in spinal surgery technology — in 2021. But the latter turned out to be harder to entice than first thought. Its reticence, however, as seemingly been overcome, as John George reported in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Globus Medical crafts and vends implantable medical devices and the instruments (including robotic) that place them. NuVasive’s specialty is medical hardware and their associated surgical software.

Initial discussions between the two corporate leaders launched with an in-person meeting in September 2021. When media reports got wind of the intended union, the resulting stock effect put the talks on hold.

November 2022 brought another offer. And another stall, albeit a short one.

A month later, a revised Globus proposal included a 33 percent premium that NuVasive’s leadership found acceptable.

By Feb. 8, 2023, the merger agreement was signed.

The specific financial and strategic benefits of the merger, outlined by the firms, include establishing a company with a presence in more than 50 countries and more than 5,000 employees. The larger commercial sales organization will enable the blended firm to further penetrate existing and future markets.

Full details of the Globus Medical-NuVasive agreement are at the Philadelphia Business Journal.
