A new study prepared by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia found that the number of jobs in the Philadelphia region’s life sciences industry held by women is growing at a faster rate than those held by men. John George reported the trend in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Center for Breakthrough Medicines in King of Prussia, one of the more aggressive hirers in the local life sciences industry, confirms the observation.

Its hiring managers have noted it in the ongoing effort to keep the company staffed.

The contract and development manufacturing organization has grown from around 100 people to 400 in the past two years. Further, corporate leaders expect to double that number by the end of 2023 and get to a staff of 1,600 by the end of 2024.

Audrey Greenberg, the center’s co-founder and chief business officer, said that over half of submitted applications for openings are from women, a fact that does not surprise her.

She said that the Philadelphia area in general has a strong foundation in women starting and leading life sciences companies.

Greenberg also contends, however, that the industry overall should expand the number of women in the c-suite.
