The Amazon Prime baseball documentary Reggie premieres Mar. 24 (today), focusing on the remarkable career of Wyncote-born Reggie Jackson. Glenn Kenny reviewed it for The New York Times.

Jackson, a Cheltenham High School graduate, is the 1993 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee who spent most of his career as a New York Yankee. He quickly established himself as an expert right fielder and hitter. He was also a vocal commentator on race, social issues, and other topics — some more controversial than others — in the 1970s.

On the diamond, however, his talents were untouchable. Jackson’s batter’s box abilities were the stuff of legend, earning him the nickname “Mr. October” for his ability to advance teams to the World Series.

The documentary shows that Jackson’s tone and demeanor have not quieted with age.

It includes his goal to become MLB’s first Black owner of a team, chronicling his bid for the Oakland As and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They were unsuccessful, a reality that Jackson indignantly blames on not being “a good fit.”

The Reggie review concludes with this recommendation from critic Kenny: “Even as this movie goes deep on still-vital topics, it doesn’t skimp on baseball dish.”

He cites in particular the recollection of Jackson’s three home runs in the 1977 World Series.

More on Reggie Jackson and his new documentary is at The New York Times.
