Dr. James Butler III — a Gwynedd Mercy University alumnus and Distinguished Alumni winner — will be hosting a discussion surrounding the Public Health landscape on March 22 from 6 to 7 PM. Guests will learn about Butler’s path into and through the public health sector.

In 1999, Butler graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Doctor of Public Health degree in health services administration. He completed his post-doctoral training in cancer prevention and tobacco control at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Before joining the University of Maryland College Park in 2010, Butler was a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

Butler is the founding Associate Director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Equity and is currently serving as Director of the Department of Behavioral and Community Health’s Antiracism, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

Throughout his career, Butler has published more than 50 manuscripts, 21 of which he co-authored with former graduate students and mentees.

As a behavioral scientist, Butler has more than 25 years of experience carrying out community engaged research and practice with African Americans.

Butler’s postdoctoral training was focused on strategies for recruiting and retaining African American public housing residents in cluster-randomized clinical trials. These strategies continue to play an integral role in his current research and National Institute of Health (NIH) grants.
