ProgenyHealth, a Plymouth Meeting care-managing resource for newborns, offered its view of 2023 trends on maternal and infant health. Investors Observer ran them.

Among its findings was a notable spike in U.S. infant mortality. ProgenyHealth analysts see it now as “three times the rate of most other high-income countries.”

In a related finding, the number of preterm births hit a 15-year high in 2022, the report said. More than 1 of every 102 babies in the U.S. is delivered at least three weeks early.

“The rising risks that dominate the maternal and infant health landscape are tied to an intricate mix of factors,” said Linda Genen, MD, Chief Medical Officer, ProgenyHealth.

She identified them:

  • Political/legal shifts
  • Economic pressures
  • Healthcare workforce shortages
  • Systemic bias contributing to mistrust among communities of color
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits exacerbated by the pandemic

The trending topics worth watching in 2023 include:

  • Increased tracking of economic/social conditions that affect health status
  • Difficulties in delivering maternal care to rural communities
  • Rising pregnancy risk factors such as Preeclampsia
  • Further industry progress in balancing high-tech with high-touch
  • Greater focus on mental health for maternity patients
