Wawa saw a 36 percent jump in revenue last year, as it continues to rank 24th among the 25 largest private companies in the U.S., writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The ranking comes from Forbes, which also placed Wawa as Pa.’s largest private company.

Revenue increased by $11 billion to $14.93 billion in its most recent fiscal year.

Its long-time rival, Altoona-based Sheetz, successfully closed a large gap between itself and the Delaware County company last year.

It jumped 30 spots in the Forbes rankings from No. 67 to No. 37 when its revenue doubled from $5.6 billion to $11.7 billion.

Sheetz employs 24,000 people and has 650 stores in Pa., Md., Va., W.Va., Ohio, and N.C. It is opening 30 more stores in Western Pa. in the next five years and expanding into Mich. in 2025.

Wawa is moving into Sheetz territory, with plans to double its store count in Central Pa. by 40 more stores. That’s part of its enthusiastic growth plan by which hopes to double its current store count of 950 stores over seven states by 2030.

Wawa employs 40,000 people.
