The 2022 Catholic Crypto Conference at the Sheraton Valley Forge in King of Prussia brought together two seemingly disparate topics: religion and technocurrency. Christopher Parker chronicled the convergence in America, the Jesuit Review.
The two-day forum, the first of its kind, featured speakers from Goldman Sachs, the University of Notre Dame, and other related organizations.
A popular viewpoint among some attendees was the appeal of crypto as a decentralized financial entity outside the control of large institutions. Its a characteristic that often resonates with Catholic-conservative Americans.
Amid the political and cultural rhetoric, much of the content was plainly informational. Many speakers sought merely to keep potential investors from buying into something that they did not fully understand.
Attendee reaction to the financial-faith mashup, however, was mixed.
Deacon Bruno Schettini of St. Clair, PA, in Schuylkill County, went into the event believing that “Catholic and crypto; those shouldn’t go together.”
The presentations didn’t shift his thinking much.
He left saying, “This is probably a fad, in my mind …. It’s something real, but it’s also something very risky.”
