Montgomery County Community College will unveil new programming this fall that will help Computer Science students land the next wave of internet-based, information technology jobs.

The Cloud Computing associate degree and certificate programs will introduce students to the high-demand occupation of cloud computing and computer networking. Through hands-on instruction with industry experts and practice inside state-of-the-art computer labs, students will gain the confidence and experience to enter this very competitive field.

“It’s the direction the industry is going,” said James Bretz, MCCC’s Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. “The industry is taking everything to the Cloud.”

Upon successfully completing either the degree or certificate program, students will enter the job market with the ability to analyze and solve computer hardware and software problems, program and configure Cisco routers, and describe the principles and components of cloud computing. They’ll also prepare for industry certifications, including from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, which can be taken outside the program, giving them an advantage for entry-level cloud computing positions.

“It means jobs and flexibility,” said Bretz. “If you have these skills, you are eligible for entry-level jobs with lots of room to grow all over the place. These are often remote jobs. Our students can work for companies all over the country. With these skills, students will be ready to work and grow in the field from day one.”

Bretz recommended students completely new to the Computer Science field begin with the associate degree program, whereas those already in the field looking to gain new, relevant experience to strengthen their resume might benefit more from the certificate program instead. That said, the Cloud Computing Certificate allows students to earn stackable credits that can seamlessly transfer to the Cloud Computing Associate Degree Program, should they choose to pursue it.

“There are no signs of this field slowing down,” said Computer Science Professor Marie Hartlein, who is a co-coordinator of the program with Computer Science Assistant Professor Matthew Krause. “This is a strong area of job growth. Especially in a world where things are becoming more virtual.”

“This program is for individuals interested in network administration, maintenance, and security utilizing cloud-based solutions. Cloud computing is the new flavor of network admin,” said Krause. “Due to the ever-changing technological landscape, successful IT professionals must be enthusiastic lifelong learners to keep pace and stay in demand. This program of study is great for those looking to enter the industry or existing professionals looking to expand, refresh, or augment their skills.”
