Hustle, Adam Sandler’s new movie that was partly filmed at Manor College’s gym, premiered on Netflix earlier this week and is getting rave reviews, writes Victor Fiorillo for the Philadelphia Magazine.

The film stars Sandler as a basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who is trying to jumpstart the NBA career of a talented but troubled overseas prospect, played by NBA’s Juancho Hernangomez.

While reactions to the movie’s trailer were not stellar, now that reviewers have had a chance to watch the whole movie, they are raining praise on both the actors and the director, Jeremiah Zagar.

Los Angeles Times praises Sandler and singles out Zagar for turning what some believed would be a flop into a winner “sculpted with some care.”

The Guardian review likens the movie to Oliver Stone’s football movie Any Given Sunday, and notes that “Adam Sandler scores in rags to riches tale.”

The Variety critic praised Zagar’s “invigorating verve and skill,” adding that while the movie “is fiction, but it often feels like a true-life drama” and “that dovetails with the new authenticity of Adam Sandler, who has learned to pour every bit of himself into a role.”
