New Program at Ursinus Represents the College’s ‘Next Exciting Chapter’ in Its Commitment to Women’s Athletics
This fall, Ursinus College in Collegeville will become the eighth college or university in Pennsylvania with an NCAA women’s wrestling program, writes Matt Hagy for Ursinus College News.
It will also become the first Centennial Conference school to offer women’s wrestling to its students as a varsity sport.
“The start of our women’s wrestling program at Ursinus is the next exciting chapter in our storied history and commitment to women’s athletics,” said Ursinus Director of Athletics Erin Stroble. “We proudly welcome our current and future women’s wrestling competitors in joining our long tradition of opportunity for female student-athletes.”
When the program launches, women’s wrestling will become Ursinus’ 26th varsity sport and its 14th women’s sport.
The school has received national acclaim for being a trailblazer in women’s collegiate athletics.
It is best known for the success of its field hockey team under the leadership of Eleanor Frost Snell, the legendary coach who also guided the women’s basketball, softball, and women’s tennis programs. The field hockey team has produced more All-Americans than any other higher education institution nationwide.
Ursinus’ men’s wrestling team debuted in 1929-30 and has since produced 111 NCAA All-Americans and Scholar All-Americans.
