Merion Golf Club is honored to host the 42nd Curtis Cup Match on June 10-12, 2022, writes Riley Hamel for USA Today.

The biennial match features international competition between the top female amateur golfers in the United States against those from Great Britain and Ireland. The Curtis Cup is jointly organized by the USGA and The R&A. Merion is excited to welcome the Curtis Cup back to the East Course, where it was last hosted in 1954, says the Merion Club Club about the history of the Cup.

Rachel Heck, Rachel Kuehn, Rose Zhang, and Jensen Castle automatically qualified for the team, USA Today reports. 

The Curtis Cup Match dates to an informal match played in 1905 with Frances Griscom, the 1900 U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion, who suggested that it would be fun for a group to play in the British Ladies Open Amateur and 8 Americans made the trip overseas to play.

An informal match developed between the American team and the British team. Although the U.S. team was soundly beaten, the goodwill established by their visit always stayed with the competitors. 

 In 1931, the British Ladies’ Golf Union agreed to regular matches with the United States. The USGA then decided to finance the American team and administer the competition.  The Curtis Cup was accepted the same year as the official trophy.

The Curtis Cup Match has proven to be an introduction area for young women. Competitors have included Paula Creamer, Austin Ernst, Jessica Korda, Stacy Lewis, Nancy Lopez, Mariah Stackhouse, Lexi Thompson, and Michelle Wie. 

Merion Golf Club has a storied place in championship golf history. The Club has hosted 18 USGA championships and is proud and excited to support championship women’s amateur golf.

The roster is officially set with Amari Avery, Megha Ganne, Rachel Heck, Rachel Kuehn, Rose Zhang, Emilia Migliaccio, Latanna Stone, and Jensen Castle.
