Christopher Burch, who is best known for helping launch the Tory Burch fashion house, got his start in Conshohocken, when he founded Eagle’s Eye sweater and clothing brand along with his brother, writes Andres Viglucci for the Miami Herald.
Burch, who was born in Bryn Mawr, later sold the startup for $60 million and moved on to other ventures. For Burch, that included backing Argentinian artist and designer Alan Faena in converting a dilapidated grain warehouse on abandoned docks in Buenos Aires into a luxury hotel.
Following the venture’s huge success, he bought a rustic surfing lodge in 2012 in one of Indonesia’s far-off islands and spent $30 million with a partner to transform it into a laid-back yet luxurious resort, Nihi. The resort has been recognized by various leisure magazines as one of the very best in the world.
Now, Burch has a new project. He is backing the conversion of a former mattress factory in Hialeah, Florida into a music, arts, and entertainment complex, Factory Town.
“I looked at that Factory Town and thought that could be the start of something very unusual,” said Burch. “I can feel the energy of it, the way it’s constructed, the people, and the location.”
