Prof. Robin Kolodny, department chair of political science at Temple, presents a diploma and other honors for Sam Collington at the Collington family Prospect Park home.

Sam Collington, a Temple University student activist from Prospect Park, killed Thanksgiving weekend, was remembered Saturday with a diploma presented to his parents, writes Barbara Laker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Collington , 21, an Interboro High School graduate, was supposed to graduate from Temple in May as a political science major, with plans to attend law school.

He was fatally shot during a carjacking.

His parents, Molly and Dennis Collington, describe him as an “old soul” with a dry wit, who tried to get everyone to vote and who spoke out for racial, social and economic justice.

“I know every mother would say the same thing — that my son was special, but he really was a gift for all of us,” Molly Collington said. “He was charismatic, outgoing, just full of life. It’s just a tragedy for everyone.”

His diploma was presented by Temple political science department chairman Robin Kolodny and political science professor Artemy Kalinovsky.

Sam was also awarded the Political Science Merit Award and the Department of Political Science Outstanding Capstone Paper Award.

An Interboro Education Foundation scholarship has been started in Sam’s memory. Temple has created a Samuel S. Collington Internship Fund supporting students who do public service.
