Thanks in good part to advantages that include its parks and trails, Philadelphia ranks among the top 20 most livable cities in America, according to Outside.

The ranking was based on four main metrics: diversity, sustainability, affordability, and outdoor equity. The latter criteria turned out to be the metropolis’ strong suit.

Philadelphia boasts an impressive amount of space devoted to parks and recreation, with 13.2 percent of its footprint comprising parkland. The city was designed to draw its residents outside as far back as the 17th Century, and it has only continued to build on that legacy.

Established in the 1800s, the 2,050-acre Fairmount Park is a conservation triumph with hardwood forest, serpentine creeks, and over 50 miles of trails.

According to Trust for Public Land, 95 percent of the city’s residents live within a ten-minute walk of a park. This includes 96 percent of the city’s residents of color.

During past year, visits to those spaces increased by more than 50 percent, and the usage trend shows no signs of slowing.

The future also looks bright, with over 40 community organizations working to complete the Circuit Trails. The sprawling multiuse system stretches from downtown Philadelphia into surrounding counties and will be around 800 miles when finished.
