Career Corner: 3 Top Great Resignation Takeaways

Ever since the pandemic began, it caused workers to reassess what they want out of their jobs. And it turns out, quite a few felt they were not getting what they needed in their current work, causing a mass exodus of employees quitting over the last year.

Seeing the most common reasons employees listed for quitting has taught us a lot. Stacker recently put out a post on the subject explaining what the career world has learned from so many people deciding to leave their jobs—and it certainly is not all bad news.

The Pandemic Did Not Cause the Great Resignation

Though the pandemic undoubtedly brought people quitting to a boil, research shows it is a trend that has been building since 2009.

Stagnant wages, and work increasingly creeping into personal time are two major reasons that have had people more willing to look for work elsewhere. In August, 4.3 million people quit, but that is just the biggest spike in the trend.

People Want to Stay Remote

The pandemic also forced many people to work from home, and it turns out a great deal of them prefer it.

Not having to deal with a daily commute is a load off many people’s minds, and a lot of research shows jobs are able to maintain the same productivity levels in this format. It has forced more employers to be open to the idea of workers telecommuting.

Employees Have More Power Now

As recently as in 2019 it was the norm for employers to have a long line of workers willing to accept whatever conditions were offered. Heading into 2022, now companies are having a tougher time filling positions. It is forcing employers to raise wages, and be more open to negotiating with applying candidates. Thanks to the Great Resignation, we now have an employee’s job market.

It is easy to see the news of the businesses having to close due to a lack of workers and believe that the Great Resignation could be a bad thing. But in actuality, it is just forcing employers to have a long-overdue look at what they are willing to offer their employees in exchange for their services.
