The proposed trail will take the place of the abandoned tracks from the former Norfolk Southern Railroad, connecting Phoenixville with Great Valley.

A six-mile-long hiking and biking trail from Phoenixville to Great Valley could become a reality within the next five or six years, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.

The proposed Devault Trail Activation Project was presented at an open house hosted by:

  • Charlestown Township officials
  • The Chester County Planning Commission
  • The Transportation Management Association of Chester County

Along with Phoenixville, the planned trail would span portions of Charlestown and Schuylkill townships.

Details, however, are still uncertain, as the Norfolk Southern Railroad still owns the land. And although planners conducted a feasibility analysis six years ago, they have not moved forward with engineering or design work. This means that the project does not have a price tag yet and will still need to go through a master planning process.

“The purpose of this project is to determine the appropriate entity to acquire and who will build and manage the trail,” said John Meisel, manager of transportation operations and planning at TMACC. “We are not at the ready stage to start building.”
