St. Charles Borromeo Seminary is making a historic change, moving from its iconic campus in Wynnewood to a parcel it recently acquired from Gwynedd Mercy University, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

The Roman Catholic seminary sold its 150-year-old campus two years ago to Main Line Health for $43.5 million.

According to the deal, they have until the 2024-25 school year to relocate.

Now that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia has acquired a 15-acre lot on the northern border of the Gwynedd Mercy University’s campus, St. Charles knows where its new – albeit smaller compared to its current 150 acres – home will be.

“We’ll be moving to a new campus, where we can invest in our future and be much more sustainable,” said Bishop Timothy C. Senior, auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese and the rector at St. Charles.

The parcel the seminary purchased includes Alexandria Hall and Visitation House. The two buildings are used for housing and ministry activities.

The seminary now has the option to develop other structures on the property or enter into an agreement with the university for its seminarians to use the existing campus facilities.
