American Airlines Cuts Flights to Cover Weather, Labor Shortage, Traveler Uptick

By

Bad weather, a labor shortage, and a sudden surge in travelers have forced American Airlines to cancel some of its flights through mid-July, reports Katherine Scott for 6abc.com.

The most impact has been felt at American’s Dallas-Fort Worth hub.

Philadelphia Airport is a major hub for the airline.

“Oh it’s crazy, everyone wants to get out,” said traveler Kevin Smiegocki.

“Now that they lifted a lot of the restrictions and whatnot, I think people are trying to take advantage now, trying to get to some sort of normalcy, that’s what we’re trying to do,” said traveler Jennifer Reyes.

American Airlines said “unprecedented weather” has disrupted crewmember schedules and flights at the same time everyone wants to travel.

By canceling a fraction of flights through mid-July, American can “build in additional resilience and certainty to our operation” stated an airline release.

The changes impact the fewest possible number of customers. Flights were adjusted in markets where there are multiple options for re-accommodation, the airline stated.

“We never want to disappoint, and feel these schedule adjustments will help ensure we can take good care of our customers and team members and minimize surprises at the airport,” American stated.
