Valley Forge-based PJM Studying Crisis in Texas to Prevent It Happening Here
Valley Forge-based PJM, the nation’s largest power grid that serves 65 million people, has been studying what went wrong in Texas to ensure the same thing does not happen here, writes Dann Cuellar for the 6abc.
The main difference between the Texas grid and PJM is that the latter is connected with other grids throughout the nation. That allows it to import or export power as demand goes higher or lower.
PJM has faced some new challenges during the pandemic, which has especially complicated the jobs of control room operators. To overcome these issues, PJM has taken some unprecedented steps.
“We actually created a third control room and we’re actually sequestered operators,” said Bryson. “Our operators stay overnight for a month at a time. They’re all volunteers, which is great.”
PJM is also making sure that all of its power plants have enough resources to generate electricity.
“We have a gas-electric team that works at PJM that looks at all of the gas supplies for all of the gas units and makes sure that they are ready for the operating day,” said Bryson.
