While remote learning comes with numerous side effects, nearby Devon psychotherapist Matt Gelber is warning about one emotional side effect that is becoming especially concerning, writes Caroline O’Halloran for SAVVY Main Line.

“The active attempted suicide rate has doubled this year,” said Gelber. “This is the greatest mental health crisis of my lifetime.”

The doctor, whose 11-year-old twins attend Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School, said he has seen stress, anxiety, and depression in both his kids and in their friends.

“If we don’t get kids in front of teachers and back with their friends, there will be long-term mental health outcomes,” he said.

His warnings have also been echoed by other mental health professionals, such as Rosemont psychologist Sara Maggitti.

“Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and helplessness were at epidemic proportions before COVID,” she said. “Now, their incidence has tripled.”

On a positive note, Gelber is excited that schools are now taking this issue and the mental health of children seriously. This has led him to decide to run for the Tredyffrin-Easttown school board.
