Manor College is hosting Evening with Manor, its first-ever Virtual Gala Thursday, Nov 12 7PM-8:30PM in honor of two individuals who have had a significant impact on the College itself, education in general, and the surrounding community, James and Dr. Lourene Nevels.

With nearly 40 years of experience in the securities and investment industry, Mr. Nevels is the chairman and founder of Philadelphia-based investment advisory firm, The Swarthmore Group.

Mr. Nevels served as Chairman of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission from 2001-2007, appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania. Nevels was also appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation by President Bush in 2004, and served as Chairman from 2005-2007.

Additionally, Mr. Nevels is a member of the Board of Tasty Baking Company, a member of the Board of the Hershey Trust Company and Milton Hershey School, a Chair and member of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and is on the Board of Trustees at Manor college.

While Dr. Lourene Nevels spent her professional career as a licensed psychologist in private practice, as well as serving as Director and Staff Psychologist at the Counseling and Personal Development Center at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, she is also an author and illustrator.

Dr. Nevels authored “Powerful Wisdom: Voices of Distinguished Women Psychotherapists,” a book that gives almost 200 women psychologists a voice to share their experiences in a profession historically dominated by men. She is also the author and illustrator of the children’s book “A Dog’s Life.”

Dr. Nevels is a lifelong lover of animals, now currently caring for the hundreds of hummingbirds that migrate to her home, and has volunteered her time as the President, Docent Council, at the Philadelphia Zoo where she continues to serve as a docent.

With a particular interest in art, she currently serves as a docent at the Barnes Foundation and was a former docent at the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia.

Manor’s Virtual Gala is completely free, however registration is required and attendees have the option to separately purchase a Gourmet Food Selection Box to enjoy the full flavor of the event from home.
