Weldon Soda Fountain in Glenside is one of the few places left that offers ice cream soda, a nostalgic treat that originated in Philadelphia nearly 150 years ago, writes Jenn Ladd for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The ice cream parlor designed in the style of 1930s has been operating since 2015. It changed owners in October after being bought by Rachel Tomaro and her fiancé, Benny Johnson.

The pair, who were not ice cream pros before, modernized the space somewhat by keeping it old-fashioned, but not as old.

“We bring you back to your childhood – like more recently,” said Tomaro.

They have also expanded the menu with dessert pies, soft-serve, and cold brew floats.

During the pandemic downtime, Tomaro started crafting syrups at home using fresh fruit. She played around with various flavors, including pineapple, strawberry, and mango.

The blueberry-lavender syrup she created and combined with seltzer to make soda ended up being the most popular at Weldon’s – especially when paired with vanilla ice cream.

“The next step is actually making our root beer and the cola,” said Tomaro.
