Ricky Amorim, a recent Springside Chestnut Hill Academy graduate, is helping diabetics during the pandemic with his “We Are Better Than This – America” nonprofit, writes Greg Starks for the Chestnut Hill Local.

Amorim, who was the captain of SCH’s lacrosse team, is a type 1 diabetic. He was diagnosed more than a decade ago and has found that with all the challenges, the disease has also been a blessing in disguise.

“I can confidently say that diabetes has led to the successes in my life because it gave me motivation to be better in all aspects of life,” he said.

When the pandemic began, Amorim soon realized that diabetics were among the most vulnerable populations.

So he immediately sprang into action and created a nonprofit that helps diabetics in the middle and lower classes afford the copayments to be able to buy the supplies they need.

And while creating the nonprofit was not easy, it was also a great learning experience for the teen.

“At the end of the day, if I’m helping people, I’m happy,” he said.
