While many colleges struggled when finding ways to switch to virtual final exams, Haverford College made a seamless transition thanks to the overall trust environment created by the school’s honor code, writes Susan Snyder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Before taking their final exams online, the college’s students signed a statement, agreeing to adhere to the educational institution’s honor code. There was no need for online proctors or outside monitoring.

However, this is nothing new for Haverford. The selective liberal arts college does not supervise exams even when they are administered on campus. The college has a long-standing atmosphere of mutual trust between professors and students that helped out immensely for the pandemic.

“Haverford was better prepared for the crisis than most schools,” said Soha Saghir, a rising senior and co-chair of Haverford’s honor council. “Taking tests on our own or doing tests on our own is a practice that is very much ingrained in our culture already.”

During exams students self-reported issues, and in some cases were either awarded additional time to finish the exam or were also allowed to reschedule.
