While law offices and courts across Montgomery County are closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, except for emergency matters, the Montgomery Bar Association has continued to offer legal answers to consumer and employment complaints related to the coronavirus pandemic, writes Carl Hessler Jr. for the Montgomery Media.

According to Jim Mathias, the association’s director of marketing, development and public affairs, thousands of residents and employers are currently facing legal concerns for the first time. These include eviction, family placement, labor and employment and many other matters.

To help resolve these issues, the bar association is fully staffed and offering its services remotely at nearly normal levels despite the coronavirus pandemic.

“The public benefits greatly from these programs, especially in times like these,” said Montgomery Bar Association Executive Director Nancy Paul. “There are no easy answers, but providing access to our members for direction about common or even complex legal questions improves access to justice for everyone in Montgomery County.”

Residents and businesses needing legal assistance can contact the Montgomery Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service to receive a free, qualified referral to a lawyer for advice on business or employment matters. All participating lawyers are charging a discounted rate of up to $40 for the first consultation of up to 30 minutes.

Additionally, if the matter does not require a lawyer, the caller may be referred to a local agency or legal service organization for assistance.
