CNN: Mushroom Farm in Landenberg ‘Upping Its Game’ to Keep Pace with Increasing Demand
Bella Mushroom Farms in Landenberg is working hard to keep up with the increasing demand for mushrooms as the new food staple keeps growing in popularity, writes Parija Kavilanz for CNN Business.
This increased demand is partially being driven by a consumer push to eat healthier by focusing more on plant-based foods.
“We haven’t run out as yet, but we’re definitely trying hard to keep up,” said Gale Ferranto, who helps run the third-generation family business.
The farm is a part of an area in Chester County known as the epicenter of mushroom production in America. Here, around 50 family-owned farms account for more than 60 percent of total domestic mushroom production.
“We call it the Mushroom Mecca,” said Ferranto.
Bella Mushroom Farms produces five million pounds of mushrooms each year. They are then packaged and sold under its Buona Foods brand, as well as other private labels for grocery store chains.
“It’s not going to be easy, but we are upping our game to grow more mushroom crops a year from now,” she said.
