Standing at $21 million, toll violations at turnpike interchanges in Montgomery and Bucks counties, the two busiest interchanges in Pennsylvania, now account for more than half of the total amount currently owed statewide, writes Kennedy Rose for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

“These violators are not those who understandably may be confused by the toll lanes or forgetful about paying a bill,” said Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissioner Pat Deon. “These are people who regularly and intentionally get on the turnpike with no intention of paying their tolls ever.”

Now, Bucks County is working to change this. The county has hired a new detective and attorney to investigate and prosecute repeat offenders who have more than $2,000 in unpaid tolls – which is a felony.

The turnpike switched to using E-ZPass in 2000, which leaves many lanes open so that motorists can pass while avoiding paying the toll.

“If people choose to take unfair advantage of the turnpike chronically and repeatedly while not paying the toll in Bucks or Montgomery counties, these most persistent violators will be held criminally responsible,” said Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub.
