Bill Hawthorne, who teaches honors civics and AP government at Pottsgrove High School, is teaching his students about the impeachment process using the ongoing hearings, write Ellie Silverman, Maddie Hanna, and Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Hawthorne originally planned to teach a section on mass media in the spring, but he decided to introduce the lessons sooner due to the latest impeachment process.

“They need help understanding essentially what the media is telling them, and how they’re doing so,” Hawthorne said.

The main question he has been getting from his students is whether the president will be impeached.

To address this, he has focused his lessons on the process, explaining what an impeachment inquiry is, what roles do the House and Senate play, and what it takes to have articles of impeachment issued.

Joe Paone, who teaches government to seniors at Norristown Area High School, has also been tackling the issue while making sure to keep his opinion out of the equation even when students ask for it.

“I usually bring the conversation back to ‘what do you know about what’s going on so far? What have you heard?’” he said.
