Ethan Widrig, a St. Joseph University student, is honoring the memory of his late grandmother by running a 5K every day to raise money for Alzheimer’s research, writes Anna Orso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 21-year-old senior is also running to support both those battling Alzheimer’s and their families and caregivers who are often the unspoken victims of the disease.

Widrig has been running a 5K each day since August 26 and is planning to continue until December 3. That will round off a 100 days of 3.1-mile runs, or 500 kilometers in total.

He is doing it to benefit the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, a nonprofit that funds Alzheimer’s research but also provides services and support to caregivers.

He set his initial fundraising goal at $2,000, which he has already managed to surpass.

He also organizes runs with other people, including entire groups of service-minded students, such as the school’s Gaelic football team.

“I wanted to make it something where the community could come run with me if they wanted to,” said Widrig, “so more people can support the cause.”
