Lockheed Martin Awarded New Reentry Vehicle Contract, Majority of Work To Be Carried Out In King of Prussia
The majority of the work for the latest $108 million contract awarded to Lockheed Martin by the U.S. Air Force for the Mk21A Reentry Vehicle program will be carried out in King of Prussia, according to a staff report from the Defence Blog.
The contract was announced last week by the Department of Defense.
Lockheed Martin has been tasked with conducting technology maturation and risk reduction to supply a low technical risk and affordable RV. This needs to be capable of delivering the W87-1 warhead from the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Weapon System.
Components needed for the reentry vehicle include a high velocity nose tip, high impulse transducer, fuze, and aeroshell forward section, as well as the body section and rear cover, radio frequency subsystem with antennas, and an RV spin-up system.
The work will also include an inflight disconnect cable and other electrical cables.
In addition to King of Prussia, work on the contract will be distributed to other Lockheed Martin locations as required. The work is expected to be completed by October 2022.
