Beth Sholom Congregation in Elkins Park, the national historic landmark designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is currently hosting an exhibition by artist David Hartt, writes Jesse Dorris for the Metropolis.

In The Histories, also known as Le Mancenillier, Hartt explores themes of diaspora and belonging through a blend of tapestry, drone footage, African-American and Afro-Caribbean music from the nineteenth century, and gardening.

In his meditation on exodus, the artist presents his own take on Wright’s concept of total design applied to a time of total peril.

He uses the synagogue in his contemplation of the way communities react to their built environments.

The exhibition is the first in a line of planned activities that are meant to raise the profile of the synagogue that has been concerned for its future lately.

The congregation brought in Cole Akers of The Glass House, who in turn brought in Hartt, a newly appointed faculty member of the department of fine arts at The University of Pennsylvania. Akers is curating the exhibition.

The Histories will be on view through December 19.
