Cirque du Soleil returns to the Fairgrounds at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks with Amaluna July 24 through August 25.

Amaluna invites audiences to a mysterious island governed by goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon when Cirque du Soleil returns to the Fairgrounds at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks this July 24 through August 25.

“We’re thrilled that Cirque du Soleil wanted to return to Montgomery County with this production,” said Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board Director of Government & Cultural Affairs, Jessica Willingham. “The fact that an organization of Cirque du Soleil’s caliber came back to Montco two years in a row is a testament to the thriving cultural scene we have here. Montco is a true arts destination that attracts world-class talent.”

In the wake of a storm caused by Queen Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional love story between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. Their love is put to the test when the couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith, and harmony.

The name Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which means “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon,” a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where the story unfolds.

Amaluna’s Tony Award-winning Show Director, Diane Paulus, drew from a series of classical influences when creating the concept for the show, including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

“I didn’t want to build a ‘women’s agenda’ show, says Paulus. “I wanted to create a show with women

at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines.”

“Amaluna is a tribute to the work and voice of women,” explains Director of Creation Fernand Rainville. “The show is a reflection on balance from a woman’s perspective,” he adds.

The cast of Amaluna is majority female with cast members representing 25 nationalities. A 100% female band features guitars, bass, drums, cello, vocals, keyboards, and percussion.

Paulus is known for productions that go beyond the boundaries of a conventional theatrical setting to involve the audience in immersive environments and Amaluna is no exception. The show features water in a bowl that weighs a whopping 5,500 pounds when filled. Other acts include unicycle, aerial straps, dance, uneven bars, teeterboard, Chinese pole, and juggling.
