In a joint venture with the Cordish Companies, Comcast is planning to build a $50 million e-sports arena, dubbed the Fusion Arena, in downtown Philadelphia, writes Christopher Palmeri for Bloomberg.

The 3,500-seat venue will be designed specifically for playing competitive video games with more than 2,000 square feet of LED screens. There will be training facilities and private rooms where players will be able to stream video to their fans. The arena will also be near the same venues where Philadelphia’s professional sports teams play.

“Beyond competitive gaming, it’s a stunning facility that will host a wide array of events,” said Dave Scott, chief executive of Comcast Spectacor, the company’s stadium management business.

When it is completed, the arena’s 10 sky boxes will have screens where guests will be able choose their own views of the action. Also, according to Brian Mirakian, lead architect for the project at Populous design firm, the club seats will include USB ports for high-speed Internet access, providing e-sports fans with an environment “that’s never existed before.”

The new e-sports arena is expected to open in January 2021.
