With all of the speculation surrounding ballot casting during nearly every election the state has mandated each county to upgrade their machines.

Montco commissioners recently approved purchasing 400 new machines that will leave a paper trail, and hope to have them in place by the May primary, writes Tom McDonald for whyy.org.

Commissioner Ken Lawrence said the machines will cost the county approximately $6 million through the same company, Dominion Voting Systems.

Newer, electronic voting machines have the same issue as an electronic device in that they can and do break down at the most inopportune times, and they don’t leave a paper record that can be audited for accuracy.

Absentee ballots will also be counted and have a paper print out available with the new machines.

Voters and poll workers will be trained on the new machines once they arrive, and before the May 21 primary.
