St. Joseph’s University to widen Hawk Hll with a new school of Heath Studies and Education

St. Joseph's University will open the new School of Health Studies and Education in 2019.

Hawk Hill is planning to expand the nest. In the fall of 2018 St. Joseph’s University will open its newly created School of Health Studies and Education — spinning its health and education programs out of its College of Arts and Sciences.

The school will focus on preparing students for careers in the in-demand areas of health and education. The two may not be traditional pairings in a school, but they make sense at St. Joe’s, said President Mark Reed, writes Michelle Caffrey in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Reed added that this newly created school sends St. Joe’s in the direction of meeting the marketplace challenges that attract prospective students.

There’s an increasing overlap between education and allied health fields, he said, and teaching in the classroom requires a more holistic knowledge about students. The school’s Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support is a great example of that, he said, and allowing the two fields to cross-pollinate in a school dedicated to them, with a dean to oversee operations, can create a school that’s unique to St. Joe’s. Reed said that aside from the new dean, establishing the school doesn’t require dozens of new hires or new facilities. All the elements are already in place. They just need to define them, connect them and amplify them.

“Those centers need to be connected academically the best they can. They can only accomplish so much on their own,” he said.
