The American Red Cross Battle of the Badges back on June 12 pitted firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel from Norristown against the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to see who could donate the most blood.

In the end, those everyday heroes of the Norristown Police and Fire departments who regularly help folks in need triumphed over the Sheriff’s Office, writes Gary Puleo at timesherald.com.

The total collected was 82 units of blood, which will help up to 164 patients.

“Of the people who registered, 37 affiliated them with police/fire and 25 affiliated themselves with the sheriff’s office,” said Alana Mauger, communications manager, Red Cross Penn Jersey Blood Services region, who added that not all donors chose to cast a vote.

Currently, the Red Cross faces an emergency blood shortage and is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donors to give now so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatment they need.
