Conshohocken Soap Box Derby enjoys record turnout

More new racers than usual turned out Wednesday for the 2018 Soap Box Derby in Conshohocken.

As a result, the future looks bright for the decades-old tradition, writes Gary Puleo at timesherald.com.

Nineteen first-timers were on board this year, noted Leo Costello, who serves as assistant to longtime race director Mark Marine.

“We have 54 cars total in the Stock, Super Stock and Masters divisions, which is a big jump from other years,” Costello said. “It should be a good race. We have one family joining us from New Brunswick, and that’s because the New Brunswick race folded and we were able to take them here.

“It was disappointing to see that race fold because it had been funded by Johnson and Johnson. It was actually on their property. It’s a shame it’s gone.”
