Acme to close King of Prussia, Lansdale stores

The Acme supermarket chain has announced it will shutter three of its stores, including two in Montgomery County. The closings will affect 240 employees.

The company will shutter its stores at DeKalb Plaza at 320 W. DeKalb Pike in King of Prussia,  affecting 75 employees; 1150 Welsh Road in Lansdale, with 80 employees are located; and 1001 N. DuPont Highway in Dover, Del., where 85 employees will be laid off, writes Natalie Kostelni at bizjounals.com.

The grocery industry continues to be competitive as more stores enter the market including discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi as well as Whole Foods and even outlets such as Target, which has increased its grocery offerings.

Compounding matters, Acme has struggled with some leadership changes and its status has also taken a hit in recent years.
