The Highlands Mansion & Gardens, 7001 Sheaff Lane, Ft Washington, will host a Working Dog Demonstration on October 22, from 1 – 4:00 pm.

This program will give an understanding of the important jobs done by canines in today’s world. The dedication and focus of both dogs and their handlers, and the teamwork and trust between canines and humans is impressive to watch, according to a press release.

Dogs have been an integral part of life at The Highlands since it was built in 1794. Diaries document the presence of dogs in the mansion as companions as well as working dogs on the farm, and each had important roles. Visitors to The Highlands see how life was lived on a country estate from the late 18th century through the mid 20th century. This event, focusing on working dogs, will show how dogs supported families at The Highlands historically, as well as the many new and diverse roles dogs are trained to take on today.

The Highlands Historical Society is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the restoration, preservation, and interpretation of The Highlands Mansion & Gardens, a beautiful 44-acre historic site with a late 18th-century Georgian mansion and formal gardens. The grounds of The Highlands include over 40 acres of open space, a c.1800 barn, springhouse, and a two-acre formal garden with Gothic Revival gardener’s cottage and stone walls. Tours of the mansion and gardens are available Monday through Friday at 1:30 pm. Please call 215-641-2687 for a reservation.

The Highlands is located at Skippack Pike (Route 73) and Sheaff Lane in Fort Washington, PA, and is easily accessible from the Blue Route and the PA Turnpike’s Fort Washington/Ambler exit 339.
