Bala Cynwyd’s WCAU Television Studio Building is among the historic properties on this year’s Lower Merion Conservancy’s WatchList, according to a staff report from Mainline Media News.

For over two decades, Lower Merion Conservancy has published the WatchList. This helps protect historic properties in Lower Merion and Narberth under threat of demolition, neglect, or development.

The WCAU Television Studio at 10 Monument Avenue is currently owned by Comcast. The sixty-five year old building represents one of the most important but least acknowledged historic buildings in the township.

Now known as the NBC 10 Studio, it was the first building nationwide to be designed as a television studio.

George Howe, the renowned architect who designed the building, conceived a sleek glass and metal design which is today recognized as an important representation of mid-century architecture.

But the historic property is under threat from the new zoning on City Avenue. This has created development opportunities that could result in the demolition of the studio.

However, the area’s new zoning also has the potential to help preserve the building by making it possible to incorporate it into a creatively-designed development.
