Seven of Nine Residences Designed by Famous Architect Louis Kahn are in Montgomery County
The famous architect, Louis Kahn, only designed nine residences during his lifetime, seven of which are in Montgomery County, writes Curbed.
Kahn’s earliest residential commission was the 1940 Jesse and Ruth Oser House in Elkins Park. Situated on the former estate of J.B. Stetson, the hat baron, the location presented Kahn with some design challenges.

He circumvented them by situating the home on a north-facing slope. This home also featured his first conversation nook, a dedicated family gathering spot which he later replicated in his other residential designs.
The Philip and Jocelyn Roche House in Whitemarsh Township was built seven years later and features Kahn’s signature brick wall in the living room. The next home Kahn designed was the Morton Weiss House in East Norriton Township which won the 1950 AIA Gold Medal.
The Samuel and Ruth Genel House was built in 1951, and is often compared to the Weiss House. However, Kahn considered it far superior to his earlier work.
His other homes in the area include The Norma and Bernard Shapiro House in Narberth, the Norman and Doris Fisher House in Hatboro, and his last residential creation, Kahn Korman House in Fort Washington.
