Renowned Naturalist, Author to Speak at American Birding Expo in Oaks
As the first of two nightly keynote presentations, well-known artist/naturalist/writer Julie Zickefoose will present “Baby Birds: An Artist Looks into the Nest” at 7 PM on Friday, Sept. 29, the opening day of the third annual American Birding Expo taking place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks.
A scientist’s relentless curiosity joins the artist’s quest for beauty in this highly revealing presentation based on a 13-year, day-by-day study that documented the nestlings of 17 bird species as they progressed from hatching to fledging, in some cases as quickly as 11 days.

Throughout that period, Zickefoose recorded the daily changes that took place in the form of over 500 watercolor studies that will be the cornerstone of her presentation.
She will also share her influences, as well as the artistic process, that led to the publication of her popular book of the same name. Other books she has authored include Letters from Eden and The Bluebird Effect.
“The work, the wonder, and the fun of studying nestlings will make this presentation irresistible, highly inspirational, and brilliantly entertaining for both birders and nature enthusiasts.
It’s also a must-see event for aspiring natural history artists,” said Bill Thompson III, Editor & Co-Publisher of Bird Watcher’s Digest, the organizer of the event.
