Montgomery County is losing millions in tourist dollars through missed sports travel opportunities according to a new feasibility study by the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board, writes Kenneth Hilario for Philadelphia Business Journal.

According to the agency, area sports events have grown significantly over the past five years, accounting for 54 percent of all group business booked in the county. To take advantage if this, the VFTCB launched a 15-member commission last year called Valley Forge Sports to gain more traction in this segment.

Now the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board has commissioned a Sports Facilities Advisory consulting firm to measure the potential impact a sports facility would have on Montgomery County.

The study unveiled last Thursday at the Center Ice facility in Phoenixville, showed that such a facility would help bring in more of the multibillion-dollar sports travel industry to the area.

It also points out that a new sport facility in Montgomery County has the potential to generate over $113.4 million in economic impact in just the first five years and optimistically could fill around 291,000 hotel room nights during that period.
