Norristown Area School District Receives Civics Lessons from Montgomery Bar Association

Students from Ridge Park Elementary School participated in a mock vote last week.

Following the recent hotly contested presidential election, educators from the Montgomery Bar Association are bringing civic lessons to Norristown Area School District schools as part of its Civics Program, writes M. English for The Times Herald.

Attorney Patrick J. Kurtas, a member of the Montgomery County Bar Association, is part of the 2016-17 teacher teams for the “Liberty and Law” civics education program. This aims to instill interest in governmental processes in students from a young age. As part of the program, he recently met with students at Norristown’s Stewart Middle School.

The lesson plan involves getting kids to identify which qualities define a good leader and talking about how people become leaders. Kurtas hopes the conclusions children take out of the lessons include a realization that any one of them could become one of tomorrow’s leaders. He also emphasized the importance of parents in the process.

“With MBA’s civics program, we only have an hour in class with the kids, so, ideally, the learning doesn’t end when we walk out the door,” he noted.
