Pope-Inspired Food Drive Helps Most Vulnerable in Montco

By

The Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board rolled out the Pope Francis-inspired "Freedom from Hunger" campaign in September.

A food drive organized by Valley Forge officials and inspired by the visit of Pope Francis, who spent a night at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Lower Merion, is taking place for the second year in a row, writes Ukee Washington for CBS Philly.

This marks the second year that non-perishable food is being collected countywide. As part of the aptly titled “Freedom from Hunger” drive, 12 donation boxes have been placed at hotels and various Valley Forge attractions, according Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board president and CEO Mike Bowman.

“We will get to 1,776 pounds of food this year,” he said.

Philabundance will distribute the collected food to those in most need of it.

“1,776 pounds can equate to 3,000 meals for those in need,” said Amanda White of Philabundance. “In Montgomery County specifically, there are about 80,000 people in need today. Any food drive, we’re extremely grateful for, especially those that are bringing in high items in protein, including peanut butter, stew, and tuna.”
